Commercial Business License
Full requirements are outlined in the Business License Ordinance. Before applying, please review the questions below to determine what approvals may be required for your business.
Important Questions to Consider
- Will your business have a name or be incorporated? Visit the State of Maine for business registration information.
- Will your business require state licensing? Refer to State of Maine licensing resources for guidance.
- Will your business have a sign? A Sign Permit application is required.
- Will you be making changes to the commercial space? Building or plumbing modifications require permits. Electrical work for commercial projects must be permitted by the project’s Master Electrician through the State of Maine.
Application Requirements
Submit the New Business License Application to the Town Clerk along with the following:
$25 application fee
Dimensioned floor plans of the entire commercial property, clearly identifying:
- Proposed indoor use
- Proposed outdoor use
- Parking layout
Proof of right, title, or interest in the property (deed, lease, or similar documentation)
Review and Approval Process
You may be contacted by the Code Enforcement Officer, Fire Inspector, or Town Clerk if additional information is needed. Once all requirements are satisfied, the Town Clerk will schedule a Public Hearing at the next Select Board meeting. Following the hearing, the Select Board will consider the application for approval.
